Government jobs remain the first choice for many Pakistanis because of job security, pensions and fixed working hours. But the system can be confusing: different bodies recruit for different posts, and every job has its own test and eligibility rules. This guide explains how government recruitment works so you know where to look and how to prepare.
Federal vs provincial jobs
- Federal government jobs are in federal ministries, divisions, attached departments and autonomous bodies. Many officer-level posts are recruited through the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC).
- Provincial government jobs are in provincial departments such as education, health, police and revenue. Each province has its own public service commission: PPSC (Punjab), SPSC (Sindh), KPPSC (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) and BPSC (Balochistan). AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan also have their own commissions.
Understanding BPS (pay scales)
Government posts are graded on Basic Pay Scales (BPS). Lower scales cover support and clerical posts; middle scales include assistants and junior officers; BPS-16 and above are officer grades. The job ad always mentions the BPS, which tells you the seniority and usually the required qualification.
Who conducts the tests?
- Public service commissions (FPSC, PPSC, SPSC, KPPSC, BPSC) recruit for many officer and some lower posts, including the CSS exam run by FPSC.
- Departments themselves sometimes recruit directly for lower-grade posts.
- Testing services are hired by departments to conduct written tests for some posts.
- Armed forces have their own recruitment systems. See our guide to joining the Pakistan Army.

How to prepare
Start preparing general sections (English, general knowledge, Pakistan affairs, current affairs, basic maths) early, because they appear in almost every test. Then add subject preparation for the specific post. Our written test preparation tips and interview questions guide will help.
