Government Job Age Limit and Age Relaxation in Pakistan Explained

Age limit is one of the most common reasons government job applications are rejected in Pakistan. Many candidates misunderstand how age is counted or assume they are eligible for a relaxation when they are not. This guide explains the basics in simple terms.

How is age counted?

For most government posts, your age is calculated on the closing date of the advertisement (the last date to apply), unless the advertisement states another date. You must not be younger than the minimum age or older than the maximum age on that date. Your date of birth is taken from your CNIC or matric certificate.

Typical age limits

Each advertisement states its own minimum and maximum age. As a general pattern, many junior posts have a minimum age of 18, while maximum ages commonly fall between 25 and 35 years depending on the post, scale and department. Competitive exams such as CSS have their own specific age rules. Always rely on the advertisement for the exact limit.

What is age relaxation?

Age relaxation means the maximum age is increased for certain categories of candidates. The categories and number of years are set by federal and provincial rules and are written in the advertisement. Common categories include:

  • Serving government employees
  • Candidates from certain less-developed areas or regions
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Ex-servicemen and widows or children of government employees in some cases
  • A general relaxation announced by the government for a period

Relaxations are usually not automatic. You may need to attach proof, such as a service certificate or disability certificate, and some relaxations cannot be combined.

How to check your eligibility

  1. Find the closing date and the age limits in the advertisement.
  2. Check if any relaxation applies to you and how many years it allows.
  3. Calculate your exact age in years, months and days on the closing date.
  4. Add the allowed relaxation to the maximum age and compare.

Common mistakes

  • Counting age on the application date instead of the closing date
  • Using a different date of birth from the one on CNIC/matric
  • Claiming a relaxation without supporting documents
  • Assuming a general relaxation is still in force after it has expired

Rules change and differ between federal and provincial governments. The advertisement and the official rules of the recruiting body always take priority over any general guide.
