How to Apply for Government Jobs in Pakistan Online: Step-by-Step

Every year thousands of federal and provincial government posts are advertised in Pakistan. Government jobs remain popular because of job security, pensions and fixed working hours, but the application process can be confusing, and fake advertisements are common. This guide explains how the system works, where real jobs are announced and how to apply correctly.

Who recruits for government jobs?

  • FPSC (Federal Public Service Commission) – recruits for federal posts, mostly BPS-16 and above, including the CSS competitive exam.
  • Provincial public service commissions – PPSC (Punjab), SPSC (Sindh), KPPSC (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), BPSC (Balochistan) and AJKPSC, for provincial posts.
  • Departments and organisations directly – many ministries, autonomous bodies, the armed forces, police and state corporations hire through their own recruitment cells.
  • Testing services – some departments use testing agencies (such as NTS, OTS or others) only to conduct the written test; the department still makes the appointment.

Where are real jobs advertised?

Genuine government vacancies are published on the official website of the commission or department and usually in national newspapers. Many federal advertisements also appear on the government’s official job portal. Before applying, always confirm that the same advertisement appears on an official website ending in .gov.pk (or the organisation’s official domain).

Step-by-step application process

  1. Read the full advertisement. Note the post name, BPS scale, number of seats, domicile/quota, age limit, qualification and the last date.
  2. Check eligibility carefully. Age is usually counted on the closing date of the advertisement. Check whether you qualify for any age relaxation.
  3. Create an account on the official online portal of the commission or department, using your own CNIC, mobile number and email.
  4. Fill in the form exactly as per your documents – name spelling, date of birth, marks and passing year must match your certificates.
  5. Pay the application fee only through the method stated in the advertisement (for example a bank challan or an official online payment channel). Keep the receipt.
  6. Upload documents if required: photo, CNIC, degrees, domicile and experience certificates, in the requested size and format.
  7. Submit before the deadline and download or print the submitted application.
  8. Watch for test and interview schedules on the same official website and your registered email/SMS.

Documents you will usually need

  • CNIC (and its copy)
  • Recent passport-size photographs
  • Matric, Intermediate and degree certificates with mark sheets
  • Domicile certificate
  • Experience certificates (if required)
  • Fee receipt
  • HEC/board attestation for some posts

Understanding BPS scales

Government posts are graded on the Basic Pay Scale (BPS) from 1 to 22. Lower scales (BPS-1 to 4) are for support staff, BPS-5 to 15 cover clerical and assistant posts, BPS-16 and 17 are officer-level entry points (BPS-17 is common for graduates through commissions), and higher scales are senior management. The scale tells you the pay range and the level of the job.

Merit, quota and domicile

Most posts are filled on merit within quotas set by provinces and regions. Your domicile decides which quota you apply under. Advertisements state how many seats are reserved for each province, women, minorities and persons with disabilities. Read this section carefully, because applying under the wrong quota can make your application invalid.

Common mistakes that get applications rejected

  • Applying after the age limit without a valid relaxation
  • Spelling or date mismatches between the form and documents
  • Missing documents or unattested copies
  • Paying fees through an unofficial channel
  • Submitting on the last day when portals are slow
